Getting the quest (Swamp Thing)

  • The easiest way is to head to Downwarren (if you've made progress in the main story, you already know this village) and read the notice on the bulletin board. What's this creature that's tearing couples apart? Time to find out.
  • The second way is to simply run into the quest giver while crossing the swamps. He'll flag down Geralt and ask for help, and things proceed from there as usual. His location is marked on the map so you know where to look.

Quest

However you pick up the quest, the setup is the same — out in the peat bogs, something is killing the workers there. It's already claimed several peat cutters and blanketed the whole area in a strange fog that makes you start choking the moment you step into it.

Passage of the mission

You can haggle with the quest giver, and I'd strongly recommend it.Bargain successfully and you can walk away with double the reward!I'll explain how at the end. For now, negotiate up to 262 crowns and get moving.

Passing the mission - use the Eye of Nehaleni

Once you've taken the contract and gotten all the details, head deep into the swamp toward the dangerous fog. You'll quickly see that Leslav wasn't exaggerating about how dangerous it is if you try walking into it. In a small clearing you'll find a corpse surrounded by odd-looking stones.

Mission

At this point a group of drowners, regulars in these swamps, will jump the witcher. Deal with them, then go back to examining the body. You'll spot claw marks of different sizes on it, which tells you more than one monster is involved. Now turn your attention to the strange stones around the corpse. Geralt notices right away that these aren't ordinary stones — they're an illusion, and you can dispel it using the "Eye of Nehaleni," the magical item you got from Keira Metz. In case you forgot how it works: switch on your witcher senses and just hit the action button on the stone.

Once the illusion drops, the witcher sees clear tracks left by the beast — proof that the monster tried to cover them up. If you don't have the Eye, don't worry: just head to the peat workers' shed near the corpse. The monster's tracks lead there too.

You'll find a second body in the shed, and it's clear from the scene that the poor guy didn't even get a chance to grab a weapon before he was killed. Near the corpse, you'll spot more traces of the monster — this time, decayed remains.

Swamp monster victims

After examining both bodies, the witcher concludes the culprit is a fogling — but not an ordinary one. This one's ancient, and far stronger than its kin. The decayed remains give off a distinct smell that will guide the witcher straight to a cave. If you'd rather not follow the scent, you can find the cave entrance on your own — there are three of them.

Lair monsters from the marshes

Two of the entrances are hidden behind illusions, while the third is guarded by an ordinary fogling. As always, use the magic eye to dispel the illusions. It's not a boss fight, but this guard still puts up a solid fight — especially since it can vanish and summon foggy copies of itself, which gets annoying fast.

Fight with the Fogler

After beating the guards, the witcher gets a moment to rest, repair gear, prep bombs and potions, and apply Necrophage Oil for extra damage. Once you push deeper into the cave and enter a large chamber, a cutscene kicks in. Turns out we were right — the monster really is a fogling, just bigger than usual and looking a bit different.

Fight the foggy monster - Monster from the swamps

Regular foglings already hit hard, and this boss hits even harder, so keep Quen up at all times. It can also conjure illusions of itself, but these are mostly there to distract you rather than deal damage. Even when it vanishes, you can still track it if you watch the battlefield closely — look for a shadowy shape closing in, dodge, then land two or three quick hits in response. Aard also works great here since it can knock the creature out of invisibility, assuming you land the hit — and with some luck, Aard can even knock it flat on the ground.

Once you beat the boss, grab the trophy and the unique sword “Carabella”. The trophy is a great pickup early on since it gives a 5% bonus to gold, and if you're low on cash like most players are at this point, it's worth equipping on Roach right away. “Carabella” is also solid gear — the sword has 3 slots for runestones and can freeze enemies on hit, which makes fights against pretty much anything much easier.

Return in a week ...

Once the boss is dead, the fog over the swamps clears, meaning the mission's done and you can go collect your reward. Leslav is waiting right where you left him — near his house.

Talk with Leslav about the promised reward

If Geralt never haggled with the quest giver, nothing unusual happens — you just get the amount promised (and miss out on the chance at double pay).

If Geralt did haggle with Leslav, though, it turns out the peat worker can't actually cover the full amount right now. All he has on him is a handful of crowns he was saving to buy tools.

  • Take whatever he's got right now — I wouldn't recommend this option, since the other choice pays off far better. But it's your call if you'd rather take the last coin from the guy.
  • As you wish, I'll come back in a week — we get it, money's tight for everyone, and we agree to return in a week. You can jump straight there through meditation. Leslav will be waiting when you return, so you'll know exactly where to go. As a reward, you'll get double the payment, which will give Geralt's wallet a nice boost.

The “Swamp Thing” quest is now complete.
